Here is one explanation. I can't attest to the accuracy of what he's saying but it sounds legit. One thing for sure, is that the estimate will be more accurate if you enter your height, weight and sex in settings and use a good heart rate monitor during your workouts.

And on your note about the resistance auto follow feature (which is available on the newer generation - Bike+ only), I don't think that would impact accuracy of the calorie estimates. That feature simply adjusts the resistance based on the workout automatically. Using the original Bike you're adjusting it manually but either way Peloton is measuring your resistance throughout which factors into the calorie count.
