There should be a rear sutoff bumper sensors on the treadmills. This would allow someone to approach from the rear of the unit safely. Soon as they got within 1 meter the treadmill would turn itself off. This would also be a great safety feature for your pets.

It sounds like Peloton is planning to add some kind of a guard rail behind the tread so that things aren't able to get underneath it from the back.
