Instructors talking too much

I think the instructors are great, but I really wish they would have classes that have minutes-long periods where you just ride and listen to the music. Some of them feel the need to talk literally the whole time and it makes it hard to get into the ride. Everyone I talk to feels the same way so wondering why there is not a whole section of classes that feature this?

New to the bike and the forum. After reading through the comments I get that there are a wide range of people that use the Peloton and that Peloton is not servicing the those of you that are training or moderate to high end athletes.

For those of us that bought the Peloton to get into shape, the motivational part of the rides, I find to be helpful. I think Peloton has focused too heavily on this market. Most likely their data shows that we are the largest consumers purchasing Peloton's and they are trying to keep us as members.

That said, I do see a point in the distant future for myself when I do get fit that I would like less talking. I also agree that the extra banter is not needed. I use the option for more music than instructor on every ride. Though I do want to hear them for the queues.

Has anyone sent a request to Peloton requesting less talk for high end rides?

I have called them many times over the past 8 months, so far they have done nothing. Simply adjusting the setting on the “more music” option they already have would be the easiest solution. Or adding a mute instructor button.

I totally agree with you I bought this bike to work out and train I don’t need therapy sessions I don’t need dance lessons I don’t need to hear about their past family things. They talk too much . The female instructors tend to be the worst. Peloton has received many complaints on this but I don’t think they really care. I don’t think there’s one class that you can actually do without getting some kind of storytelling. What they need to add to the bike is where you can push a button and tone out the instructors altogether but hear the music. And it would be great to see what the instructors are actually peddling. With so much chitchat and they have some classes going extreme speed and cadence I really can’t believe that half of them are doing the same.

What they need to do since they feel the need to talk about stuff I really don’t care about since I’m on the bike to workout, not get a lesson on life experiences or how to clear my mind ( working out does that when you don’t have to hear really stupid stuff) but have an option to push a button to completely mute the instructor but hear the music. They have the button now to lower the instructor’s voice, but damn you still hear them. And shout outs??? Are you working out to hear “good for you 500 rides”? C’mon folks do you really need that inspiration to work out harder?

Seems there's an overwhelming desire for a mute button, in order to shut out instructors more so the ones that can't stop with their irrelevant babble. I think it's time for Peloton to actually do something about it. Some people enjoy it so be it , they don't have to use THE BUTTON and they can continue enjoying it as they please . But please give the rest of us who actually don't enjoy it so much or not at all, the choice to mute the instructors when we want to.
Like most members there are definitely some instructors I enjoy more than others and that don't talk too much or when they actually talk its bearable and relevant to the class. So I stick with them , but there are time when I wouldn't mind having the option to mute them as well and just listent to the music.

What's also unfortunate is as a paying member ,there are classes that I don't do because I don't want to have to listen to the instructors. So in some way I can't access all the classes. So why limit my availability to certain classes?

That's where a mute function would change all that. I've had my bike since December of last year and by far my single biggest pet peeve is instructors that talk to much and prevent me from listening to the music.

I don't mind being given instructions that are relevant to the class, please cue me when necessary. But I don't need to hear that "I'm beautiful inside" , that "I can " or that" I'm star just for showing up". The worse is the history we're sometimes given regarding a song , If I really want to know I'll Google it after the class. I don't really mind the shout outs, the instructors I follow aren't too bad , sometimes they'll shout a little before the class begins or when it ends.

Music, for me and I'm sure for other members is the most important aspect during a spin class, so why ruin it with all the babbling?

My hope is that someone from Peloton actually reads these comments rand specifically regarding this topic and they realize how much wer'e really annoyed by all the talking. SO PLEASE DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT PELOTON!!!

Just did Hannah Corbin’s 30min Eric Church ride… let me first say, I really like most of the instructors. Don’t really care about the shoutouts, haven’t heard my name ever, so don’t really care. I have taken a ton of Hannah’s rides, she plays awesome music and has a great variety of playlists. But this maybe the worst ride I’ve ever taken, because of the talking. It’s like she tried for a record for a 1/2 hr. ride. I Have never been so frustrated on the bike… my wife heard me yell shut up several times from the other room. Sorry Hannah, but I missed most of the Eric Church songs…

Does someone from Peloton read these posts? To me, it’s getting really bad with the talking in the classes. Don’t care so much about the singing and dancing, but why must some of you talk so much? I’ve seen 2 instructors cry during classes talking about issues that I don’t care about… I don’t think I need therapy, and sure don’t want it in the bike. I wouldn’t take a class if it was advertised as a musical trivia quiz, why is this stuff allowed?
I bought a peloton to get into better shape, and I try my best just about every class, but I also love music and working out to music. I have exited out of several classes lately because of the instructors talking. I don’t care what the weather is like in NY, or what you might make for dinner. I can’t help but think that the instructors them selves would appreciate a mute button. I can imagine it gets old making all those cycling classes, and trying to motivate people in different ways, but I avoid 2-3 people, who I love their musical choices, because of the excessive talking… my post has become like most of the classes, too much lip…

Don't get this at all. If I want silence, I turn the volume on my screen off and set the auto follow on to follow suggested cadence/resistance. I turn on music on my iPods or watch YouTube or listen to YouTube music or ..... I do scenic rides, with just music, or without. I must be really weird cause I seem to be so focused on my effort and don't spend a lot of time attentively listening to the instructor if they're yapping. Someone please explain what's wrong with me? Why am I not offended that an instructor wants to motivate my effort? I mean, huh?

I mean, there's a simple solution if you don't like an instructor. Don't take their classes, or like someone else said, turn off the volume and play something else in the background (i.e. music, tv show, silence, etc.). Or use the manual ride option (if that still exists). It's kinda pointless for Peloton to hire a bunch of instructors and tell them to talk less or don't talk at all...cause that would be insanely boring and offer little variety or personality.

I agree with some of the comments here. I don't have any interest in finding out where an instructor grew up or why they like a particular song so much. I don't mind the motivational talk though, as I am still new and taking the beginner classes. Hannah Corbin is actually my favorite instructor right now.. even though her beginner classes tend to run a bit easier than other instructors.

There are several solutions here though.
  • Try the more music option less instructor setting
  • Turn the volume off completely and just use the "yellow metric ranges". This allows me to watch a movie on my big screen or listen to a Pandora music list or whatever I want. I have several "crank it up" playlists that work great for getting me fired up to ride.
pedal on..

I agree!!! I’ve been riding nearly every day for the past year and I’ve tried nearly every instructor. Let’s face it they ALL talk way too much! The “more music” option does virtually nothing and is essentially pointless. My wife is tired of hearing me yell “shut up” throughout the entire workout. You can’t even concentrate due to the EXCESSIVE TALKING! Please just stop talking so much and just let us enjoy the music and the workout!!!! It’s SOOOOOOOO ANNOYING!!!! Peleton-listen to the feedback from your customers! It’s so out of control!
